Anita Sarkeesian Lecture: Tropes v. Women in Video Games

Anita Sarkeesian was viciously attacked online after beginning a Kickstarter campaign in 2012 to raise funds for her video series "Tropes v. Women in Video Games" that would explore the role of women in video games.

Sarkeesian received countless threats

Sarkeesian came to High Point University as a guest for Communication Week

"Lots of people think they're the only ones being harassed. They are not alone," Sarkeesian told a captivated audience Thursday at High Point University.

"As a human being, you should care about other human beings. Men should care because video games have bad representation of them too."

"As female fans, we typically don't get to love these games unconditionally."

The female characters in video games are "always defined as being the female of the group instead of having other traits or personalities."

"Women can be playable as long as they're hot."

"This isn't about sex. Sex in stories is not the problem here."

"People often say sex sells, but this isn't true. It's sexism and sexual objectification that sells."
